How to replace timing belt on 2001 Dodge neon?

Timing belt cracked.Timing belt slipping/.Timing belt broken.Timing belt making noise.In this cases the timing belt has to be replaced.

Removal & Installation


2.0L (VIN C) SOHC Engine

1. On Cirrus, Stratus, Breeze, and Sebring Convertible models, disconnect the negative battery cable from the left strut tower. The ground cable is equipped with a insulator grommet which should be placed on the stud to prevent the negative battery cable from accidentally grounding.
2. On Neon models, disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the drive belts and accessories.
4. Remove the right inner splash-shield.
5. Remove the crankshaft damper.
6. Remove the right engine mount.
7. Place a support under the engine.
8. Remove the engine mount bracket.
9. Remove the timing belt cover.
10. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolts.
11. Remove the timing belt and the tensioner.
    
    NOTE

    When tensioner is removed from the engine it is necessary to compress the plunger into the tensioner body.
12. Place the tensioner in a soft-jawed vise to compress the tensioner.
13. After compressing the tensioner place a pin (a ⁵ / ₆₄ in. Allen wrench will work) into the plunger side hole to retain the plunger until installation.

To install:

1. Set the crankshaft sprocket to Top Dead Center (TDC) by aligning the notch on the sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing, then back off the sprocket three notches before TDC.
2. Set the camshaft to align the timing marks.
3. Move the crankshaft to ¹ / ₂ notch before TDC.
4. Install the timing belt starting at the crankshaft, around the water pump, then around the camshaft last.
5. Move the crankshaft to TDC to take up the belt slack.
6. Reinstall the tensioner to the block but do not tighten it.
7. Using a torque wrench apply 250 inch lbs. (28 Nm) of torque to the tensioner pulley.
8. With torque being applied to the tensioner pulley, move the tensioner up against the tensioner bracket and tighten the fasteners to 275 inch lbs. (31 Nm).
9. Remove the tensioner plunger pin, the tension is correct when the plunger pin can be removed and replaced easily.
10. Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions and recheck the timing marks.
11. Reinstall the timing belt cover.
12. Reinstall the engine mount bracket.
13. Reinstall the right engine mount.
14. Remove the engine support.
15. Reinstall the crankshaft damper and tighten to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
16. Reinstall the drive belts and accessories.
17. Reinstall the right inner splash-shield.
18. Perform the crankshaft and camshaft relearn alignment procedure using the DRB scan tool or equivalent.

2.0L (VIN Y) Engine

Valve timing is critical to engine operation. Use care when servicing the timing belt. There are a number of timing marks that must be properly aligned or engine damage will result. If the timing belt has not broken or jumped teeth, it is recommended that the crankshaft be turned by hand (clockwise) to Top Dead Center (TDC) No.1 cylinder compression stroke (firing position) before beginning work. This should align all the timing marks and serve as a reference for later work. Some technicians will apply a small amount of white paint to all timing marks. This helps make them more visible under the low-light conditions found underhood.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the accessory drive belts.
3. Using C 3281 crankshaft holding tool, remove the crankshaft pulley center retaining bolt.
4. Using puller tools 1026 and 6827, remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Remove the power steering pump from the bracket and position it aside. Do not disconnect the hoses.
6. Remove the power steering pump bracket from the engine.
7. Use a floor jack with a piece of wood on it and raise the engine to take the weight off of the engine mount.
8. Remove the engine mount and bracket.
9. Remove the front timing belt cover.
10. If not done so previously, align the timing marks. Loosen the timing belt tensioner and remove the belt.
    
    WARNING

    Do not rotate the crankshaft or camshafts after removing the timing belt or valvetrain components may be damaged. Always align the timing marks before removing the timing belt.
11. For 1997 models:
    1. If the timing belt tensioner is to be replaced, remove the retaining bolts and remove the timing belt tensioner. When the timing belt tensioner is removed from the engine, it is necessary to compress the plunger into the tensioner body.
    2. Place the tensioner in a vise and slowly compress the plunger.
       
       NOTE

       Position the tensioner in the vise the same way it will be installed on the engine. This is to ensure proper pin orientation for when the tensioner is installed on the engine.
    3. When the plunger is compressed into the tensioner body, install a pin through the body and plunger to hold the plunger in place until the tensioner is installed.
12. For 1998-01 models:
    1. Place an 8mm Allen wrench into the belt tensioner, then using the long end of a ¹ / ₈ in. (3mm) Allen wrench, rotate the tensioner counterclockwise until it slides into the locking hole.
13. Remove the timing belt.

To install:

1. Check that all timing marks are still aligned. Bring the crankshaft sprocket to¹ / ₂ a notch before TDC.
2. Install the timing belt. Starting at the crankshaft, route the belt around the water pump sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprockets, then around the tensioner pulley.
3. Move the crankshaft to TDC to take up the slack in the belt. Install the tensioner to the block but do not tighten the retaining bolts.
4. For 1997 models:
   1. Using a torque wrench on the tensioner pulley, apply 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm) of torque to the pulley.
   2. With the torque being applied to the tensioner pulley, move the tensioner up against the tensioner pulley bracket and tighten the retaining bolts to 23 ft. lbs. (31 Nm).
   3. Remove the tensioner plunger pin. Pretension is correct when the pin can be removed and installed.
5. For 1998-01 models, remove the wrenches from the tensioner.
6. Rotate the crankshaft two revolutions and check the timing marks. If the timing marks are not properly aligned, remove the belt and reinstall it as described.
7. Install the front timing belt cover.
8. Lower the engine enough to install the engine mount bracket.
9. Install the bracket and remove the floor jack.
10. Install the power steering pump bracket and pump.
11. Install the crankshaft pulley using C-4685-C pulley installer.
12. Tighten the mounting bolt to 105 ft. lbs. (142 Nm).
13. Install the accessory drive belts.
14. Connect the negative battery cable.
15. Start the engine. Check for leaks and proper engine operation.
